The Long Game

TRAINING INSIGHTS

“It’s about the long game, not about winning anything at “youth level” and then nothing as an adult” was a comment Michael Carolan shared from the last post that stimulated the grey matter.

One of my favourite models to share with the youth athlete and their parents is the one shown on the image, whether the training was for strength, power, body composition, etc. I used to emphasise it usually takes years and smart training to achieve the threshold values you need to compete and win. You train to improve in the off-season and then attempt to maintain/retain in the in-season over progressive seasons. Progress should be steady, stepped and integrated i.e. macro-workload planning.

Do you think too many focus on the here and now, and not enough consideration is given to the long game? What’s the solutions if this is the case?
