Rest- It's Overrated!

STRENGTH AND FORCE

Does this train of thought resonate with you? First up though, you need to know I haven’t written a training program for 10 years. My role now is more around training trainers than athletes. However, in a prior life I was in the trenches neck deep with athlete’s like many of you are now. When working with these athletes/players, typically I only had them for 45-60 minutes, so every minute was precious, and I packed a lot into these sessions. Needless to say, there was very little rest if any. Tri-sets were common (e.g. upper + lower + corrective or balance or prehab etc.) as to was combination training. The hidden curriculum was in the intensity and focus they needed for such sessions. I talked about this previously i.e. we need to get athletes into consistent habits around training, nutrition, sleep, etc. Once we have this in place, we begin layering intensity into what they do in their training.

Essentially, I found different things to put into their interset rest periods that did not interfere with the goals of their particular training cycle. I was wondering if anybody thinks the same and if so what are some of your favourite “interset interludes”?
