The T in SPOT was all about making decisions about changing technique if you thought it was contributing to injury. This area is bit of a minefield really. I will mention two areas that come to mind and wonder if they resonate with you? The first minefield is whether the S&C coach has the liberty to cross professional boundaries into the coaches (technique) and physiotherapists(injury) spheres of influence? In some integrated organisations this is not a problem, however, in other environments this is definitely a no go. Even more interesting is when your thoughts on technique and injury, are different to the coach and the physiotherapist. How do you reconcile this?
The second minefield is around decision making to correct faulty technique. Though the technique looks faulty, after years of practice the athlete’s musculoskeletal systems has maladapted to that movement. Quite often when we try and correct certain movements, injuries begin occurring. I found these decisions particularly difficult - whether to lay extra strength and resilience around a faulty pattern or try and correct this movement. Have you experienced the same?
If so, what did you do?
What other technique minefields have you come across?
