One of the main roles of a strength and conditioning coach is to try and mitigate the risk of injury in the athletes they train. In this regards the acronym SPOT helped me and hopefully may help you to check in on a few things that might assist when trying to reduce injury risk.
S – Screening – make sure you have integrated physiotherapeutic and have strength and conditioning screens in place that provide sport, position and/or activity specific diagnostics.
P – Prehab– ensure you understand the common injuries in your sport and their aetiology, in conjunction with the diagnostics from your screening tools, so you can incorporate exercises into your programming to precondition the relevant musculature.
O – Overload/work – it is imperative that you somehow monitor workload. Over loading too much or not enough are usually recipes for injury.
T - Technique – modify technique if it is likely to cause injury.
I will unpack each of these in more detail over coming posts. Is there anything else you think worth including?
