Planning- Individual Performance Planning

TRAINING INSIGHTS

Another area that we’ve seen an emergence of technology in recent years is the development of athletic management systems (AMS). There are all sorts of software out there that attempt to collate the abundance of data we collect on teams and athletes, and synthesise it into meaningful individual performance plans (IPPs). These IPPs typically integrate information from the coach, medical, S&C and mental skills staff at the very least, and provide the athlete/player with a list of “work ons” that they focus on during their respective training sessions.

I am picking most of you haven’t got access to these fancy AMSs, however, I still think we can do a very good job of getting IPPs together for our athletes regardless.  Use PIRR to generate your own template (plan) collating the information you can access (usually S&C and physio data), use it for a season (implement) and see if it works for you and your athlete (refine and review). Athletes should come to sessions knowing exactly what they need to work on and when they have achieved their training goals.  Again, like the periodised plan I talked of previously, the IPP needs to be a living and fluid document that reflects theathlete’s current needs to help her/him perform better in the long term.
