Open and Closed Kinetic Chain Overload: A Two for One

No items found.

As you know there are two kinds of kinetic chain exercises. Open kinetic chain (OKC) exercises, are movements where the hand and the foot are usually free/not fixed, these type of exercises usually better at isolating muscles e.g. knee extension. In a closed kinetic chain (CKC) exercise, the distal segments are usually fixed or stationary, and tend to be more functional movements e.g. squat.

So where am I heading with this? Well reading a yet to be published paper by Erin Feser last week and she had an interesting spin on the benefits of wearable resistance as a kinetic chain exercise. When wearing a pair of shorts or calf sleeves during walking, running and/or sprinting, you’re getting a two for one overload in the same movement, that is you're getting OKC overload during the swing or airborne phase of the step cycle and a CKC overload during the stance or ground contact phase. I think that is novel. Thoughts? Do you know of any other training methods/tools that provide a double whammy OKC/CKC overload?
