Jump Training

Do you use any movement competency assessments before you implement jump training? Is bilateral and unilateral squat competency a pre-requisite to jump training? Should athletes be able to squat 1.5 times their body weight before plyometrics? Is balance important?

I like the term jumping-landing training as it brings our attention to the movement that is most likely to cause the injury, the landing. I believe we need to reverse engineer jump training and teach and condition for landing first. Powering athletes up to jump higher, whilst not giving them the proper tools to absorb the landing forces is not good practice. I remember with the elite netballers I worked with, I hardly did any jump training as I thought they got a heap of that high intensity plyometric loading during training and games. I spent a lot of time eccentric strengthening and working on their landing capability.
