Chronotype

Are you a morning or evening person?

A few posts back the effect of diurnal variation in terms of body temperature and the effects on strength-power testing were discussed. A big thanks to Tanuj Wadhi who brought my attention to this article on chronotypes, which I found interesting as an adjunct to the post. Chronotyping is the expression of the circadian rhythm into three categories: morning (M-type), evening (E-type) and neither (N-type).

What is your chronotype?

The authors pointed out that M-types perform better, fatigue less compared to E- and N-types in morning exercise, which makes sense. Though the evidence seems weak, the authors point out that trainers and coaches may benefit from understanding the chronotype of their athletes and schedule specific training sessions accordingly.
