Are You Really Seeing Movement?

TRAINING INSIGHTS

How is your movement analysis? Do you have a critical eye? The following is one of my favourite analytic processes in that it outlines a process by which we can observe and correct movement systematically. I know it as qualitative analysis but there are most likely other labels. Guess what, it is PIRRable!

Plan/Pre-observation: Two parts to this phase: 1) break movement into phases (e.g.approach, critical instant and follow through) and make sure you understand the

biomechanical/technical critical factors for each phase; and, 2) construct your observation plan –angle of  viewing, high speed camera, sufficient lighting, how many trials, etc.

Implementation/Observation: Observe the movement or parts of the movement e.g. critical instant.

Review: Identify the errors and rate them as primary or secondary errors.

Refine/Remediate:Choose a primary error to remediate that occurs early in the movement and has flow on effects to other phase secondary errors.

I will lay PIRR to rest now, but as you see it can have a pervasive influence on how we do things and provides a process as to how we can evolve ourselves and our practice.
